The benefits of fluoride supplements in preventing caries in children age 6 and older may not be as pronounced as first believed, according to a December 2011 report published online by Cochrane Oral Health Care Group. After reviewing 11 studies involving 7,196 children, the research team concluded that the effects of topical fluoride (delivered via toothpastes, mouthrinses, varnishes, and gels, for example) are more effective than other forms of fluoride delivery, including supplements.

A report issued by the Florida Public Health Institute (FPHI) reveals that a record number of patients are seeking treatment for dental-related pain at hospital emergency departments. The upward trend is worrisome, and raises the possibility that similar developments are taking place throughout the United States. According to an analysis commissioned by FPHI and conducted by the Health Council of Southeast Florida, 115,000 visits to Florida emergency departments in 2010 were related to dental aches and pains, and could have been avoided with proper preventive and restorative care. The total cost for such care totaled $88 million (up from $66.8 million spent on 105,892 visits in 2008), with that amount expected to increase if the trend isn't reversed.

Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Dentistry report that the most common type of human skin cell—keratinocytes—can be used to produce cells with stem cell–like characteristics. The findings, published in the Journal of Biologic Chemistry's November 2011 issue, may prove beneficial to patients with limited sources of endogenous stem cells. The discovery was made as researchers investigated the use of stem cells to regenerate dental tissue. To date, this portion of the team's research has been conducted in the lab only—human clinical trials are still needed to prove safety and efficacy.
