Wilkins, BS, RDH, DMD, Dimensions of Dental Hygiene presented its inaugural The Esther Wilkins Lifetime Achievement Award to its namesake during a ceremony held in June at the American Dental Hygienists’ Association’s Annual Session in Las Vegas.

Genetic Tests May Identify Periodontal Diseases
Plans have been announced for clinical research led by the University of Michigan School of Dentistry to study the effectiveness of genetic testing in determining risk for periodontal diseases. The study, which may open a door to a higher level of personalized dental treatment, will compare gene variations with 15-year medical histories of 4,000 test subjects.

Tongue Piercing Complications Found Worldwide
The creation of a diastema caused by “barbell” jewelry in a tongue piercing is chronicled in a recent case study led by researchers at the University of Buffalo (UB), New York and published in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics. The report echoes findings from studies abroad that illustrate the prevalence of complications associated with tongue piercing among adolescents and young adults.

Smoking Cessation Lowers Harmful Bacteria
An investigation spearheaded by The Ohio State University (OSU) to better understand how specific subgingival bacteria respond to smoking cessation reveals a beneficial shift in bacterial presence among individuals who quit smoking. The study documents how smoking cessation acts jointly with non-surgical periodontal therapy to lower levels of harmful bacterial, while raising levels of healthful bacteria.

Signal in Basal Layer Identifies Oral Cancer
